Pension Glossary

The Argentine pension system has its own vocabulary. These are the key terms explained in plain language — the same terms covered in the three sessions.

Terms You'll Hear and What They Mean

This glossary covers the most important concepts in the Argentine pension system. These definitions are informational and general in nature.

ANSES Institution

The National Social Security Administration (Administración Nacional de la Seguridad Social). The government agency that administers pension benefits, family allowances, and unemployment insurance in Argentina. Your contributions go through ANSES, and your retirement benefit is paid by ANSES.

SIPA System

The Integrated Argentine Pension System (Sistema Integrado Previsional Argentino). The public pension system that replaced the previous mixed system in 2008. All workers in dependency relationships and self-employed contributors participate in SIPA. It operates on a pay-as-you-go basis.

Haber Inicial Benefit

The initial retirement benefit — the monthly pension amount you receive when you first retire. It is calculated based on your contribution history, the number of years contributed, and your average taxable income during your working life. The formula has changed multiple times over the years.

PUAM Benefit

Universal Pension for the Elderly (Prestación Universal para el Adulto Mayor). A benefit available to people aged 65 or older who do not qualify for ordinary retirement. It requires no minimum contribution years but is set at a lower amount than the standard retirement benefit and has income eligibility conditions.

Moratoria Mechanism

A mechanism that allows workers to count periods without registered contributions toward their retirement requirements, by making a payment plan. Moratorias have been enacted periodically by law and have specific eligibility conditions, time limits, and terms. Not all periods or workers qualify under every moratoria.

Historia Laboral Record

Your work history record held by ANSES. It lists every employer, period of employment, and contribution amount registered in your name. You can access it online through Mi ANSES. Reviewing it is the first step in understanding how many years of contributions are registered and identifying any gaps.

Monotributo Category

A simplified tax and social security regime for small independent workers and micro-enterprises in Argentina. Monotributistas pay a fixed monthly amount that includes a pension contribution component. These contributions count toward retirement requirements, but the way they are counted differs from contributions made under dependency employment.

Autónomo Category

Self-employed workers who are not registered as monotributistas pay contributions under the Autónomos regime. Contribution amounts are higher than monotributo and are calculated based on income category. Autónomo contributions also count toward pension requirements under SIPA.

Edad Jubilatoria Requirement

Retirement age. Under current Argentine law, the standard retirement age is 65 for men and 60 for women, both requiring 30 years of contributions. These requirements can change through legislation. Understanding where you stand relative to these thresholds is one of the key topics covered in Session One.

Mi ANSES Tool

The online self-service portal of ANSES, accessible at anses.gob.ar. Through Mi ANSES you can view your work history, check the status of benefits, and access various ANSES services. You need a CUIL and a registered email or CLAVE FISCAL to log in. Session Two walks through how to use this tool.

CUIL Identifier

Unique Labor Identification Code (Código Único de Identificación Laboral). Every worker in Argentina has a CUIL, which is used to register contributions, access ANSES services, and identify your pension record. It is different from the DNI, though it is derived from it.

Aportes Voluntarios Option

Voluntary contributions that workers can make to ANSES beyond their mandatory contributions. These can be used in certain circumstances to increase the number of registered contribution years or to increase the final benefit amount. Eligibility and conditions are defined by current regulations.
